Borders in Flux
Interactive Sound Installation
ultrasonic speakers, Arduino, MAX/MSP, distance sensors, metal
Borders are no longer just physical lines on a map; they are increasingly elusive infrastructures—enacted through surveillance, biometric tracking, and sonic deterrence. Borders in Flux is an interactive sound installation that explores these evolving border mechanisms, questioning how access, movement, and perception are regulated through sound.
Using directional ultrasound speakers and distance sensors, the installation constructs an unstable sonic landscape where sound behaves as a border—some voices emerge only from specific positions, others remain inaccessible, their presence dictated by the visitor’s movement.
The installation transforms the exhibition space into an invisible yet deeply felt borderland, where movement itself becomes an act of negotiation. As visitors navigate the space, their presence alters the soundscape—activating and crossing sonic thresholds that manifest through reflection, disruption, and controlled silence.
